The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is a state-supported, privately endowed educational institution in Richmond, Virginia. Opened in January 1936, the museum is one of the ten largest comprehensive art museums in the United States with a permanent collection that encompasses nearly 50,000 works of art spanning 6,000 years of world history. VMFA houses the largest public collection of Fabergé outside of Russia, the finest collection of Art Nouveau outside of Paris, and one of the nation’s finest collections of American and African American art. Special exhibitions include Treasures of Ancient Egypt: Sunken Cities, which is currently on display through an arrangement with the Ministry of Antiquities of the Arab Republic of Egypt. VMFA is the only art museum in America that is open with free general admission 365 days a year. With nearly half a million visitors annually, the museum works to fulfill its mission to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret art, to encourage the study of arts, and to enrich the lives of all.

Mr. Alex NyergesDirector and CEO

Alex Nyerges is the Director and CEO of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. He is a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors and serves on the Mentoring Task Force Committee. As a member of the American Alliance of Museums, he serves as an Accreditation Field Reviewer. At the Virginia Center for Creative Arts in Amherst, Virginia, Nyerges served on the Board of Trustees for ten years. He is an Executive Committee Member of the French American Regional Museum Exchange (FRAME), In Washington, DC, he serves as a board member at the George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum.
In May 2011, Nyerges was presented the Chairman’s Award by the Richmond Metropolitan Convention and Visitor’s Bureau for his role as the driving force behind a major expansion, a grand re-opening, and for bringing the exhibition Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris to VMFA. In September 2012, he was awarded “The Randolph-Macon College Award for Achievement in the Arts” established by the College’s Arts Council to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to Virginia’s cultural landscape. At the 2014 FRAME Annual Conference in Dijon, France, Nyerges was presented the rank of Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) for his role in furthering the arts in France and throughout the world. In 2017, the Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau in China named Nyerges an Ambassador of Shaanxi Cultural Heritage. The honor was presented during an exclusive preview of the exhibition Terracotta Army: Legacy of the First Emperor of China.
