Shipwreck in a Thunderstorm

Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714–1789), Shipwreck in a Thunderstorm, 1770;
Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Alte Pinakothek
The representation of shipwrecks was one of the most popular themes of sublime nature in the eighteenth century. Claude-Joseph Vernet, a celebrated artist throughout Europe, elevated this genre to new heights. This depiction of dramatic rescue scenes and the night sky illuminated by lightning is an outstanding example of Vernet's painting skills.
