Mrs Anne Hart

Sir Henry Raeburn (1756–1823), Mrs Anne Hart, c. 1810;
Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Gemäldegalerie
The portrait shows the combination of deft brush strokes and warm colours that typified the work of the Scottish painter Raeburn. The subject's pose – her arm outstretched and draped in a cloak – would have been recognised by learned contemporaries as reminiscent of the famous sculpture of Apollo Belvedere. Her open gesture is indicative of a relaxed yet intense rapport with nature.
