National Museum of Slovenia

The oldest and largest museum of Slovenia, nearly 200 years old, collects, preserves, and investigates the mobile cultural heritage of Slovenia and presents it to the public.
The central museum palace on the Muzejska Street was built in 1888 and was the first building in Slovenia, assigned exclusively to culture. Today it stores rich collections of valuable objects: the oldest spring back to the Stone Age. Among other great exhibits, you can see the oldest musical instrument in the world, the 60,000-year-old Neanderthal flute as well as the charming Vače situla.
The new building of the National Museum of Slovenia – Metelkova (Maistrova Street 1, Ljubljana), extensively presents collections of historical arts and crafts objects from the 14th century to the present; there are also some occasional exhibitions on show.
A part of the National museum of Slovenia is also the Snežnik Castle, with preserved furnishing from the latter half of 19th century.
If you are going to visit Bled, then you should go to the castle cliff and visit a famous castle. It houses a renewed museum exhibition which tells a story about historical development of Bled corner and its surroundings.

A museum director since 1994, Ms. Barbara Ravnik became acquainted with the full range of issues of protection, presentation and promotion of cultural heritage. Beside university degrees in Archeology and English Studies, Ms. Ravink gained important additional knowledge in performing functions in professional associations (member of Slovenian ICOM committee, president of Slovenian Archaeological Society, president of Slovenian Museum Society, vice-president of Slovenian Museum Association). Ms. Ravink knows museum work in detail, but her especial interest is the interpretation and presentation of cultural heritage and she tries to contribute to the connection of culture with tourism, which is one of the key industries of Slovenia.
